Man burned in explosion

Published May 25, 2009

A 23-year-old man received burns to his body from an alleged incident involving a meth lab that blew up in Skyline Wednesday afternoon.

Gene Necklaus, a spokesperson for the Scottsboro Fire Department, said the man, whose name is not being released at this time, was brought by a relative to a residence in Scottsboro, where medical personnel were called to the scene.

"From there, I know he was flown to Birmingham," said Necklaus.

Necklaus said the man told fire department personnel he was burned after the meth lab exploded.

Capt. Chuck Phillips of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said, after being contacted by city police, he was unable to find evidence of a fire or meth lab in Skyline.

"We looked but found nothing," said Phillips.

Phillips said the man received burns to 35 percent of his body.

With no evidence, Phillips said charges will likely not be filed against the man.

"There's nothing else we can do," Phillips said.
