All-Star appearance
Published July 13, 2010
Pisgah's Shelby Holley will get the chance to showcase her softball talents Wednesday in an all-star setting.
Holley, a rising senior, will suit up for the North squad in the annual AHSAA North-South All-Star Softball Doubleheader Wednesday. The games are set for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex in Huntsville.
"It's an honor to be able to play in the all-star games," said Holley, who will wear jersey No. 44 during tonight’s event.
The games are part of the AHSAA's annual All-Star Week, which also features all-star games for baseball, volleyball, football, girls and boys soccer and girls and boys basketball.
Holley will become the fifth Pisgah player to play in the softball doubleheader, joining Holly Currie (2002), Emily Barbee (2003), Serena Whitaker (2004) and Breanna Ball (2008). Paige Darwin was selected for the 2005 doubleheader but instead played in the AHSAA's All-Star girls basketball game. Players cannot play in two all-star events.
It's also the third straight year that a local player has played in the event, which featured former Scottsboro standout and future Auburn Tiger Hilary Mavromat last summer.
"Shelby gets to be part of an elite group of players in the state," said Pisgah coach Billy Duncan. "It's a good honor for her. She's well deserving."
Holley missed most of the 2010 season with an arm injury before returning in late April. She was an all-state selection in 2008 and 2009, hitting a combined 33 home runs and totaling a combined 150 RBIs during those two seasons.
She has committed to play collegiately at Jacksonville State University.
Holley has played plenty of softball this summer, with more left after her appearance in tonight's all-star series.
Her summer travel team, the Huntsville Sparks, won the Amateur Softball Association's (ASA) state championship over the weekend to earn a spot in the national tournament in College Station, Texas.
As for Wednesday’s all-star games, Holley said the North team sports an impressive roster and that winning is her top priority.
"I know we're going to have a good team," she said. "We have a lot of great athletes. I know [my teammates] will be wanting to win as much as I do."
The North leads the all-time series 18-6, including a sweep in last year's doubleheader.
The rest of the North team's roster includes Hoover catcher Madison Dickey, Hatton shortstop/outfielder Jessica Speaks, Cherokee County utility player Kaitlyn Griffith, Alexandria utility player Sara Borders, Sparkman first baseman/third baseman Sarah Suggs and pitcher Tori Edwards, Corner infielder/outfielder Preslie Cruce, Sumiton Christian infielder/outfielder Shelbi Smith, Lawrence County outfielder Bridget Fulks, Mortimer Jordan shortstop Danae Hays, Tuscaloosa County infielder Ashley Rainey, Mortimer Jordan infielder/outfielder Blair Johnson, Clay-Chalkville pitcher Bethany Fronk, Huntsville shortstop Natalie Matos, Cullman first baseman Erin Lopez, Spring Garden pitcher Breeanna Blevins and Austin pitcher/first baseman Lauren Lindsey.
The North team is coached by Cherokee County's Travis Barnes and East Limestone's Brett Nave.
