100-year-old Scottsboro resident dies

Published October 24, 2009

Bertha Hall, 100, died Thursday at Highlands Health and Rehab.

Hall, who turned 100 in January and lived at Park Village Apartments until recently, will be buried Sunday at Pinehaven Memorial Gardens in Hollywood.

At Park Village Mrs. Hall was known and appreciated by all. She was honored with a party just days before her milestone birthday. And then she enjoyed a celebration with family and friends two days later on her birthday.

“Mother did well until recently,” her daughter Elizabeth Campbell said. “She did begin to go down slowly after her birthday.”

Hall had a purpose in reaching her 100th birthday. She won a wager with her grandson Donald Kennamer when she reached the century mark even though she lost it. Their friendly bet cost her $100 and the realization that if she hadn’t lived to her birthday she wouldn’t have collected anyway.

“I don’t have just one great memory,” Hall told The Daily Sentinel on her birthday. “I have had so many great memories.”

Visitation for Hall will be held from 5-9 p.m. at Scottsboro Funeral Home. Services Sunday will begin at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.
