AHSAA sets reclassification
Published November 5, 2009
The 2010-2012 AHSAA classifications and football and basketball alignments are out, and it means changes for local high school teams.
The new classification and alignments were approved Wednesday during a meeting of the AHSAA's Central Board in Montgomery.
None of the local high schools in Jackson County will change classifications.
But their are plenty of alignment changes in football and basketball for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years. Alignments for other sports were not released Wednesday.
The biggest changes in football came for North Jackson, Pisgah, North Sand Mountain and Section.
The new Class 4A Region 7 consists of North Jackson, Butler, Crossville, Cherokee County, DAR, Douglas, Fairview and Guntersville.
Pisgah's new region will feature nine teams instead of eight. Class 3A Region 7's team will be Pisgah, Brindlee Mountain, Geraldine, Madison Academy, New Hope, Plainview, Randolph, Sardis and Sylvania.
Section and North Sand Mountain will also compete in a nine-team region that covers more distance than any other region involving local teams. The region's nine teams are located in six different counties (Jackson, DeKalb, Cherokee, Etowah, Calhoun and St. Clair).
Joining NSM and Section in 2A Region 6 will be Fyffe, Ider, Ohatchee, Pleasant Valley, Sand Rock, Victory Christian and Westbrook Christian.
Scottsboro, Skyline and Woodville were not affected by the new football alignments.
Scottsboro's football region remained unchanged, as 5A Region 7 will again consist of Scottsboro, Albertville, Arab, Boaz, Etowah, Fort Payne, Madison County and Southside-Gadsden.
Skyline's and Woodville's football region switched numbers but the teams remained the same. The Vikings and Panthers go from 1A Region 6 to 1A Region 7 and will be joined by Cedar Bluff, Collinsville, Gaston, Gaylesville, Spring Garden and Valley Head.
Scottsboro was also not affected by the realignments in basketball for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, staying in 5A Area 14 with Arab, Fort Payne and Madison County.
North Jackson is again in 4A Area 14 with DAR and Guntersville. The only change has Crossville moving up from 3A to take Plainview's spot in the area.
Pisgah will play in a five-team area. The Eagles will be joined by Geraldine, Plainview, Sardis and Sylvania in 3A Area 13.
NSM and Section will again compete with Ider and Fyffe in 2A Area 14 but will also be joined in the area by Asbury, which moves up from 1A.
Skyline, Woodville and Paint Rock Valley along with Athens Bible and Whitesburg Christian will make up 1A Area 15.
As for classification numbers, determined by average daily attendance in grades 10-12, Scottsboro is the 35th largest 5A school with an average attendance of 546.
North Jackson is No. 34 in 4A (360), while Pisgah is 61st among 66 3A schools (235). NSM is the third largest 2A school with an attendance mark of 220, while Section was 35th in 2A with a mark of 188. Woodville is 30th largest in 1A with an average attendance of 114 while Skyline was 35th with 109. PRV is the smallest school in 1A with an attendance mark of 24.
