Lions surge in second half
Published October 31, 2009
The young Section Lions football team ended the 2009 season with a victory to build on Friday night.
The Lions pulled away from a young but game Woodville squad in the second half en route to a 55-28 victory Friday at Section High School.
Section (1-9) held a slim 27-22 lead at intermission but scored touchdowns on four of its five second-half possessions.
After the Lions' defense forced a turnover on downs near midfield to start the third period, freshman Aaron Chapman raced 51 yards on the Lions' first offensive play of the second half to up the Section's lead to 33-22.
The margin grew to 40-22 midway through the period when Curtis Larcom capped a six-play 69-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown, a drive aided by Cody Davis' 15-yard run on a fake punt.
A 69-yard run early in the fourth quarter by Davis setup another Larcom touchdown, this time from 16 yards out. Davis' ran for the two-point conversion to give the Lions a 48-22 advantage. Austin Morrison's 26-yard TD run capped the scoring for Section midway through the final quarter.
The Section ground game ran produced 370 yards on 30 carries, led by Davis' nine-carry, 174-yard performance. Chapman ran five times for 79 yards and two scores.
Grant Ball had a stellar game for the Panthers. The freshman quarterback ran for 238 yards and three touchdowns while completing 8 of 14 passes for 89 yards and one score. A.J. Black caught four passes for 67 yards and one TD.
Section took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter on a 6-yard TD run by Chapman and Royer Garcia's first of two PATs. But Woodville responded with an 80-yard drive that included runs of 12, 7, 16 and 6 yards from Ball before he found the end zone from 9 yards out. Ball then passed to Brandon Bingham for the 2-point conversion to give Woodville (0-10) an 8-7 lead after quarter.
The Panthers appeared to go in front by two scores, but a 41-yard touchdown run by Ball was negated by a holding penalty. The Panthers turned it over on downs several plays later, and a 57-yard run by Davis helped Section go back in front. Chapman scored from 1 yard out three plays later to give the Lions a 13-7 advantage.
The lead grew to 19-7 when Zane Wheeler scored on a 8-yard run to cap a drive that started after Davis recovered an onside kick for the Lions.
Woodville pulled within 19-14 when Ball found A.J. Black for a 45-yard TD pass, but Section's Royer Garcia returned the ensuing kickoff 64 yards for a TD to give the Lions a 27-14 lead after Davis' two-point conversion run.
Woodville got within five at 27-22 when Ball scored on a 31-yard run and punched in the two-point conversion with 22 seconds left before halftime.
