Shoppers to get tax break this weekend
Published August 4, 2009
It’s increasingly popular with moms sending their kids back to school and shoppers looking to save a few bucks on qualifying items.
Alabama’s fourth Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and continues through midnight Sunday
During the three-day period, the state’s 4 percent sales tax and taxes levied by Jackson County and all municipalities in the county (except Hytop) will be waived. In Scottsboro, that is a savings of 9 percent. According to the Alabama Department of Revenue 253 cities and counties are participating in the special event.
State, county and local sales taxes are waived on some clothing, computers, computer software, computer supplies, school supplies, art supplies and school instrucitional material.
Certain restrictions apply in each category.
Clothing, which includes all human wearing apparel suitable for general use, is non-taxable up to $100 or less per article. Clothing accessories, protective equipment and sport or recreational equipment is not among the exempt items.
Computers, up to $750, may include a laptop, desktop or tower computer system that consists of a central processing unit and devises such as a monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers sold as a package. Parts and devises not sold as part of the package do not qualify.
School software and computer supplies including: computer storage media, handheld electronic schedulers, personal digital assistants, printers and printer supplies are cover. Furniture, items intended primarily for recreational use and video games of a non-educational nature do not qualify for the exemption.
School supplies are covers up to $50 or less per item. Required textbooks on an official school book list with a sales price of more than $30 but less than $50 are exempt. Magazines, newspapers, periodicals and any other document printed in a non-bound form do not qualify.
For a complete list of exempt items visit www.revenue.alabama.gov. or for more information call the department at 1-866-576-6531 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Friday.
