Applicants to answer questions

Eleven people have applied for membership to the newly created Commercial Development Authority board in Scottsboro.

The list of applicants include nine men and two women.

The applicants are awaiting questions sent to them to answer and send back to the Scottsboro City Council.

The council is then expected to select candidates for the interview process, according to Council President Matthew Hodges.

The Daily Sentinel obtained the names of the 11 applicants and a copy of their applications. The applicants include:

• Tony Kaschak: Kaschak is president of Southern Heating and Cooling in Scottsboro. According to his resume, he has 36 years experience in management, engineering, manufacturing, installing and servicing heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Kaschak is a member of the advisory board of First Southern State Bank, a member of the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau of North Alabama.

• Janet B. Sage: Sage currently serves on the city's abatement board and is a past member of the tourism board. She is also a member of the Scottsboro Kiwanis Club and a member of the board of directors of the club.

• Donald Glasgow: Currently retired, Glasgow spent 32 years self-employed in two industries, according to his resume. He owned and developed a manufacturing and distribution company, producing the first plastic gas tanks. After selling the business, Glasgow spent 15 years in the insurance business before retiring to Scottsboro.

• David L. Nicholas: A financial adviser with Edward Jones for nearly 20 years, Nicholas has served as co-founder and past chairman of Habitat for Humanity, president of the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, president of the Lions Club and co-founder and chairman of the Spirit of Scottsboro.

• Raymond L. Hughes: After serving in the Air Force for seven years, Hughes worked in education in Georgia, where he served as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor, elementary principal and high school principal for 13 years. He also served as superintendent in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. and later on that city's council, where he was mayor-pro tem.

• Bob Cuthbertson: Cuthbertson worked five years in insurance, then 15 years in the automobile business before starting a franchised business from his home in 2001. Currently, he is the president of Disaster Restoration and Cleaning, Inc., DBA: SERVPRO of Jackson and DeKalb counties and SERVPRO of South Chattanooga. According to his resume, he has built that business into a $1.5 million company, currently employing 15 associates.

• G. Scott Berry: Berry is a practicing attorney in Scottsboro after being admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 2006. He is also currently an Adjunct Professor of Legal Ethics and Professional Responsiblity at Birmingham School of Law. Before his law career, Berry served as a high school and middle school band director.

• Mark Peppers: Peppers is the plant manager at Wenzel Metal Spinning, Inc. in Scottsboro, where he has been since 2007. Prior to that, Peppers worked in sales at Norandal USA for nine years; at Aleris/Commonwealth Aluminum in Louisville, Ky. as an account executive; and at Alcoa North American Rolled Products in Norcross, Ga. as a sales territory manager.

• Linda B. Bray: Bray is the director of marketing at Porch Home Medical in Scottsboro. She also held that position at Regional Spine and Wrist Center in Huntsville. A current member of the city's personnel board, Bray's background is in broadcast and communication with radio, cable and newspaper. She has also served as public information officer for the Jackson County EMA, a member of the Board of Directors for Crisis Services of North Alabama and currently as chairman of the Jackson County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and as a Rape Response Advocate.

• Steve Ayers: Ayers is president and owner of High Country Automotive, L.L.C., and a Toyota, Scion and General Motors franchised dealer. With over 35 years of business service, according to his resume, Ayers is a long-standing member of the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and accredited member of the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama. He has served on various automobile dealers associations and is a founding member on the Board of Safe Haven Animal Rescue.

• Mark Marshall: Marshall owns and operates a landscape construction company that predominantly installs medium to large commercial projects. Marshall has branches based in Huntsville and Birmingham and does work all over Alabama and surrounding states, according to his resume.

The city council is expected to name the five-member board by the end of March.

The board is being created to help recruit commercial and retail businesses to the city by focusing on offering incentives, such as tax breaks and help with site preparation.
