Scottsboro snaps losing skid to Fort Payne

Published December 2, 2009

Scottsboro's frustration with rival Fort Payne finally ended Tuesday night.

The Wildcats went on the road and picked up a 71-59 victory over their rival Wildcats from DeKalb County.

The victory snapped Scottsboro's 22-game losing streak to Fort Payne.

"You can't sit her and act like this is not a big win," said Scottsboro coach Brad Dudley. "There's not a tougher place on our schedule to win at than Fort Payne High School. It's a good win no doubt."

Scottsboro (2-6, 1-1) led 48-47 entering the fourth quarter, but quickly pushed its lead to 56-48 just two minutes into the final period.

Fort Payne never got closer than five the rest of the way, as Scottsboro sank 5 of 8 free throw attempts during the final 1:30 to close out the victory.

"I'm really proud of the way we finished," Dudley said. "The kids deserve 100 percent of the credit. It was a total team effort. Now we need to build on it. It's got to be motivation for us."

Ben Word scored a game-high 24 points for Scottsboro, while Jake Lewis added 14, Sammy Douglas 12, Blake Paradise 10 and Deuntae Johnson six.

LaDarin Jones led Fort Payne (1-4, 0-1) with 15 points.

• Section 75, DAR 69 — At Grant, the 2A No. 3-ranked Lions gave head coach Ronnie McCarver his 300th career victory.

McCarver has a 300-140 record during his 17-year career as a varsity boys head coach. His first four years were at Wood-ville and the last 13 at Section, where he has taken the program to three state championship games and the 2003 Class 1A state title.

"I've been lucky enough to have good players and good teams," McCarver said.

Section led 18-14, 35-27 and 50-43 at the quarter breaks Tuesday against 4A DAR.

The unbeaten Lions (6-0) sealed the victory by going 12 for 12 at the free throw line in the closing minutes.

"We're winning close games," McCarver said, "and that's what I'm most proud of. We've struggled to do that the last couple of years."

Clint Ryan had a monster game for Section, scoring a career-high 37 points. He also totaled 18 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. Section also got 23 points from Chance McCarver. K.J. Green led DAR with 22 points.

• Crossville 53, Pisgah 49 — At Crossville, No. 6-ranked Pisgah (2-2, 0-1) dropped its Class 3A Area 14 opener to the No. 3-ranked Lions Tuesday night.

Pisgah struggled offensively despite out shooting Crossville 52-25.

“We just couldn’t make one, especially in the fourth quarter,” said Pisgah coach Woody Beard. “We were stuck on 42 (points) for forever in the fourth quarter.”

The Eagles led 15-13 after one quarter, but Crossville pulled in front 26-21 at halftime. Pisgah led 39-38 after three quarters.

Brandon Sensor was the lone Eagle to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points. Anthony Rogers scored 16 while Brad Smothers and Justin Mayo had 11 each for Crossville (5-1, 1-0).
