Pisgah handles press, North Jackson
Published December 16, 2009
The Class 3A No. 6-ranked Pisgah Eagles turned North Jackson's strength into a weakness Monday night.
Pisgah (5-3) beat the the Chiefs' full-court press numerous times for easy layups during a 100-65 victory at PHS.
Pisgah coach Woody Beard, whose team features several experienced guards, said he felt his club could get some easy scoring opportunities if it could handle the pressure.
"They live and die by the press," Beard said of the Chiefs. "Our guys didn't make many mistakes against it. It didn't hurt us. Actually it helped us because we got a lot of easy looks."
Despite a 1-3 start coming into Monday's game, first-year North Jackson coach Jamie Pruett had seen his team battle until the end of each game.
But he was far from pleased with his team's performance Monday, calling it a "total lack of effort."
The Chiefs trailed 53-41 at halftime but Pisgah (5-3) quickly put the game away in the second half.
The Eagles opened the third quarter with a 22-2 scoring run, capped by Zac Barringer's putback for a 73-43 lead with 2:23 left in the period.
Pisgah led 74-51 entering the fourth quarter and topped off its fifth win with Zack Peek's layup with 30 seconds remaining which gave Pisgah's its first 100-point game of the season.
"We did a lot of good things," Beard said. "We handled their press and ours (forced turnovers). We rebounded with them pretty well. We had a lot of guys contribute."
Eight players scored at least six points for Pisgah, led by Brandon Sensor's 16.
Corey Wheeler finished with 15 while Skylar Hall had 14. Blair Kenimer and Josh Perialas had 11 apiece, while Barringer had nine, Peek seven and Andrew Morton six.
Jovani Taylor scored 15 points for North Jackson (1-4) while Will Richard had 13.
North Jackson took a quick 4-2 lead, but a 3-pointer from Perialas gave the Eagles the lead for good just 1:43 into the contest.
Pisgah used a 13-2 run to take a 26-12 advantage, one that stood at 26-17 heading into the second quarter.
Pisgah's largest first half lead was 49-30 after T.J. Robertson's 3-pointer with 2:21 left in the second quarter. But the Chiefs finished the half with an 11-4 run to trim Pisgah's edge to 53-41 heading into the third period.
