Scottsboro has dismal start to area play
Published November 25, 2009
The clock ticked agonizingly by as shot after shot missed the mark, as Scottsboro went more than 14 minutes in the first half without scoring against Arab.
That offensive draught was more than enough to do in the Wildcats, who never recovered and suffered a 48-25 loss to their visiting Class 5A Area 14 rival Monday night at Hambrick Hall.
Scottsboro (2-2, 0-1) managed just four points in the first half and converted only nine percent of its shot attempts (2-for-22) during the first two quarters of play.
Scottsboro coach Jerry Kirkland was just as displeased with his team's defensive effort. He didn't mince words about the Wildcats' overall performance.
"In 31 years of coaching basketball that may be the worst exhibition of basketball I've ever seen," Kirkland said.
"We had no intensity on defense, no focus on offense. Defense leads to offense. Our defense was non-existent and it lead to sloppy offense."
Scottsboro scored the game’s first basket to take a 2-0 lead, but by the time it made its next shot — with 12 seconds left in the first half — Arab was comfortably in front.
The Knights (4-2, 1-0), who led 22-4 at halftime, saw Scottsboro pull within 27-12 after a Rachel Gass basket and a 3-pointer by Katie Kirkland with 4:16 left in the third period.
But Arab finished the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 34-14 lead into the fourth.
Caelin Light led Arab with 16 points, while Lydia Latham, Carleigh Latham and Cassie Hayes scored seven apiece.
Gass finished with 11 points while Branford had five for Scottsboro, which made just 10 of 48 shot attempts (21 percent) and only 4 of 15 free throw tries (27 percent).
