Lions sharp defensively in season opener

The Section girls basketball team used a strong defensive effort to claim its first win of the new season.
Section dominated the first quarter en route to a 57-39 victory over Westminster Christian Monday at the Woodville Tip-Off Tournament.
The Lions (1-0) held Westminster Christian scoreless in the first quarter while building an 18-0 lead before getting out of their full-court press at the beginning of the second period.
Section coach Danielle Maples said the Lions’ defense wasn’t exactly in midseason form, but “it was close.”
“Our press looked good at the beginning,” Maples said. “We’ve got a few things to tighten up, but we did some good things in it.”
A Section victory was never in doubt after the opening quarter. The Lions led 38-20 at halftime and 52-33 entering the fourth quarter. Westminster Christian only got as close as 14 in the second half.
“I’m really pleased with how we played for a first ball game,” said Maples, whose team has a new look after returning just two full-time varsity players from last season’s Class 2A North East Regional runner-up squad.
Sophomore Taylor Adams scored 14 points for Section, which also got 12 from senior Devan Wilbanks and six apiece from senior Lee Ann Hanback and freshman Hannah Presley.
Twin sisters Josi Saunders and Dina Saunders led Westminster Christian with 17 and nine points respectively.
Decatur Heritage 60, Skyline 26 — At the Woodville Tip-Off Tournament on Monday, turnovers haunted Skyline in a loss to Decatur Heritage.
Skyline (0-2) fell behind 20-6 after one quarter and trailed 34-13 at halftime. Decatur Heritage extended its lead to 48-22 after three quarters.
Courteney Gifford led Skyline with eight points, while Destiny Brooks added five and Brandi Hunter had four.
