Arab deals Cats a bitter area loss

Published November 25, 2009

For close to 30 minutes of Monday's Class 5A Area 14 contest with Arab, Scottsboro varsity boys basketball coach Brad Dudley felt his team outplayed the visiting Knights.

The two minutes he didn't feel that way turned out to decide the game's winner.

Scottsboro committed eight turnovers during its final 11 possessions and Arab took advantage, outscoring the Wildcats 13-5 during the final three-plus minutes for a 60-52 victory Monday night at Hambrick Hall.

"We just didn't finish," said a disappointed Dudley. "We let this one get away."

Trailing 34-32, Scottsboro (1-4, 0-1) opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run on five straight points from Blake Paradise and a layup by Deuntae Johnson to take a 39-34 lead with 6:58 to play.

"In a real tight game, a run makes the difference," Dudley said. "I thought we were about to go on one."

The Knights battled back instead, cutting the Scottsboro lead to 47-46 with 4:18 remaining on one of Jonathan Knighton's four 3-pointers.

Then the Wildcats' turnover binge began.

The Knights took the lead on John William Richey's basket with 3:50 to play, and Blake Harbin followed with a 3-pointer to help the Knight's pull away. Arab eventually led 60-49 before Scottsboro hit a trey as time expired.

"We were good handling the ball until the last two or three minutes," Dudley said. "We've got to find a way to finish."

Jonathan Embry scored 17 points for Arab (5-1, 1-0), while Knighton had 16. Harbin added seven and Graham chipped in six.

Ben Word paced Scottsboro with 16 points, while Paradise scored 12, Sammy Douglas 10 and Johnson seven.

The game was close for most of the night. Scottsboro took an early four-point lead in the first quarter but Arab tied it 13-all heading to the second. The Wildcats led 23-21 at halftime, and the squads swapped the lead several times during the third period.

Scottsboro plays Douglas today at 4:30 p.m. at the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum in Rainsville. It’s part of Plainview High School’s Thanksgiving Tournament.
