NACC web cam allows real time viewing

Published March 1, 2010

Want to see in real time what is going on at Northeast Alabama Community College? Want to see what the weather is like at the college? Or give a wave to friends or relatives somewhere thousands of miles away?

Well, that can be done now with Northeast Alabama Community College’s latest technological addition. A web camera is now focused on the NACC quadrangle at the college’s student center. This web cam provides live images of the quadrangle area of campus 24 hours a day. College officials have labeled it as the Mustang Cam in honor of the schools long-time symbol/mascot.

“Web cams are growing in popularity,” Dr. David Campbell, president of Northeast Alabama Community College said. “After watching some real time broadcasts from throughout the world, we began thinking we could provide the same service here at Northeast. After checking into what was involved in bringing a web cam to campus, we found that we could install one at a minimal cost. With all the technology we have on campus, our infrastructure already was in place. So the Mustang Cam is now in operation.”

Students, staff, or the public can access the web cam by going to the Northeast web page at www.nacc.edu and clicking on the link Mustang Cam.

Campbell complimented NACC staff members Dr. Joe Burke, Kent Jones, Sam Dobbs and Cain Fairbanks for their work in purchasing the web cam and getting it installed.

“This was new territory for us,” Campbell stated. “But our staff learned what they needed to about this application and completed this project.”

With this addition, Northeast becomes one of the few community colleges in the southeast with web cam service. The college is noted for its facilities and services in educational technology. Northeast, for example, recently added wireless service onto the college’s Internet access, thus permitting Internet access at any point on campus indoors or outside. The college also has received a Title III federal grant for further development and training in educational technology. The grant was based on a proposal/application submitted by NACC staff that Title III officials awarded with the $1.2 million grant.

Web cams provide real-time images of sites throughout the world, including such things as Times Square in New York City, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and pandas at the Atlanta Zoo. The NACC Mustang Cam can now be added to that list.

“We like to think big here at Northeast,” stated Dr. Joe Burke, NACC Vice President and Dean of Instruction.
