Snow leaves quickly

Published March 3, 2010

In Scottsboro it began shortly after dawn. By 7 a.m., with temperatures hovering near freezing, the snow that had changed from overnight rain covered many grassy areas and some slushy road conditions were being reported.

Scottsboro and Jackson County Schools, in anticipation of the potential for dangerous driving conditions, delayed school openings. Scottsboro opted to open two hours late. All Jackson County Schools were slated to open at 10 a.m. but by 8:30 a.m. the system had decided to remain closed for the day. Scottsboro Schools remained open.

By 8 a.m. local police and emergency personnel were working numerous wrecks in Scottsboro and across Jackson County. Dozens of accidents were being reported from Interstate 65 east to the Georgia state line. Most mountainous roads were passable but covered in slush, according to reports from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

The storm, which began as rain overnight, affected the area for only a few hours. By late morning the precipitation had changed over to rain quickly washing away slush that had formed on some area roadways. Most of the accumulation, 2-inches in spots, on grassy areas had melted away.

Snow showers were possible overnight with little or no additional accumulation expected. Flurries may continue this morning. After low temperatures in the upper 20s, highs should climb into the upper 30s by afternoon.

Daytime temperatures should climb throughout the rest of the week. Thursday’s highs will reach into the mid 40s, temperatures will climb to near 50 degrees Friday and into the mid 50s Saturday. Sunday’s high temperature, under mostly sunny skies, is expected to climb into the low 60s. Overnight lows will range from the upper 20s to the upper 30s during the period.
