SPD’s grand day
Published May 13, 2009
There's pride in Ralph Dawe's voice as he talks these days. And there's much to be proud of for Scottsboro's police chief.
It was only a month ago when his department was cramped together in its building on John T. Reid Parkway.
At that location, the police department was told it would only be a temporary situation. Temporary turned into 11 years.
Today, the Scottsboro Police Department is in a new place, at 916 South Broad Street. After a year of construction and renovation of the old city hall, on April 27 the new police headquarters was unveiled.
"It's been a lot of hard work, planning and consulting," said Dawe. "We're now finding that it's all been worth it."
Worth it, to say the least. The state-of-the-art facility cost just over $3.1 million. To say it is nice would be an understatement.
"I just want to thank the present mayor and council and past mayors and councils," said Dawe. "They all had the foresight to know something needed to be done about the police department. And now we've seen it come to light. We're real fortunate and appreciative."
The facility is just over 15,000 square feet, according to Dawe. The city's court system, 911 and jail are also part of the facility.
Dawe said city prisoners will be housed in the new jail, beginning May 18.
"It's good to all be together," said Dawe. "It will be a lot easier now to serve the public more efficiently."
There are 48 video cameras in the building and security throughout, including requirement of a security card and pin number to enter certain doors.
Today, the police department will hold an open house from 1 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend and take a tour of the new facility.
When Dawe joined the police department in 1989, it was located inside city hall, at this same location.
As the department grew, it ran out of space. Twenty years later, after being split into two locations, it finally has the space it needs.
