Vikings focus on sharper play

Skyline’s first venture into Class 1A Region 6 play this season didn’t go well.
The Vikings lost 57-6 at Valley Head in Week 2, as the experienced Tigers rebounded from an opening loss to Section with a Homecoming victory.
“I guess they found their stride,” said Skyline coach Ray Swinford of the Tigers.
The Vikings (0-2, 0-1)did enter a hostile situation last week. It appears they’ll do the same tonight. Skyline travels to Cedar Bluff to play the Tigers at L.B. Bruce Field at 7 p.m. Cedar Bluff (1-1) opened region play with a 63-8 win over Woodville.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us this week, but we hung with them last year and we’re going to try to use some things from that,” Swinford said. The Tigers won that game 33-0.
Cedar Bluff lost in overtime to archrival Sand Rock 24-21 in Week 1.
Skyler Boswell is the Tigers’ leading rusher with 100 yards on 12 carries, and quarterback Kyle Crane is off to a good start in 2008. Crane has completed 18-of-31 passes for 254 yards and four touchdowns.
Jim Nelson (20 tackles, interception) and Jake Bevels (17 tackles) are among Cedar Bluff’s defensive leaders.
Against that defense, Swinford said the Vikings’ must cut down its turnovers and defensive miscues.
“A lot of it is just a turnover or somebody might be out of position. We’re working a lot on ourselves to get better,” Swinford said. “We’re working on not beating ourselves. When we get all that straightened out, we’ll be a good football team.”
