Records fall to SSA swimmers

Published November 18, 2009

The SSA Wet 'N' Wildcats tackled the three-day Madison Thanksgiving Invitational this past weekend.  Perhaps inspired by the high level of competition, SSA swimmers came away with 18 victories and set 14 new team records.

Zach Reichle made his final meet as a 12-year-old count by setting new team marks in the 500 Free, 50 Back, 100 Breast and 200 Breast. In scoring 66 points, Reichle became Scottsboro's first-ever seventh-grader to qualify for the AHSAA State Championships with his 5:54.39 in the 500 Free.

Reichle combined with Drew Butler, Mark Richard and Crossan Cooper to lower their record in the 11-12 Boys 200 Free Relay to 1:50.96 as well.

Logan Anderson, Kyle Vosen and Mary Margaret Green each set two new team records. Anderson established new marks in the 8-Under Boys 500 Free and 100 Back, while Vosen extended his own records in the 50 and 100 Free.  Green laid claim to the 11-12 Girls 200 Breast and 50 Free (27.95).

Kyla Reichle shattered an 18-year-old mark in the 8-Under Girls 200 IM, and Jessica Duncan raised the bar in the 9-10 Girls 500 Free. Craig Cleaver notched the final record by lowering his previous standard in the 13-14 Boys 100 Back.

Scottsboro swimmers who were victorious in individual events were Logan Anderson (six ), Kyle Vosen (four), Zach Reichle (two), Mary Catherine Gossett, Craig Cleaver, and Ryan Prickett.

Victorious relay squads for SSA were the 9-10 Girls Free (Anna Richard, Kristin Copeland, Elizabeth Rains and Jessica Duncan), 15-18 Boys Free (Michael Rossmeier, Cleaver, Rylee Powell and Ryan Prickett), and 15-18 Boys Medley (Reichle, Cleaver, Rossmeier and Powell).

In the individual events, the 8-Under Girls were led in scoring by Emily Garner with 10 points. Lily Green had several outstanding swims, and Holly Anderson and Kyla Reichle were great in limited action.

Logan Anderson was team-high for the 8-Under Boys with 83 points, followed by Curtis Cooper (25) and Staton Robbins (seven).

The 9-10 Girls were paced by Jessica Duncan's 38 points.  Also scoring were Kristin Copeland (20), Anna Richard (13) and Elizabeth Rains (four).  Ansleigh Hand swam well in her first winter meet.

Kyle Vosen's 64 points led the 9-10 Boys. The 11-12 Girls received scoring from Mary Margaret Green (18) and Mary Catherine Gossett (16).

Zach Reichle led the 11-12 Boys with 66 points, followed by Drew Butler (30), Crossan Cooper (eight), Mark Richard (four), Cole Cooper (four) and Patrick Duncan (three). Jackson and Grayson Ausley notched several personal bests.

Meghan Travis notched six points for the 13-14 Girls, and Samantha Hastings had several strong swims.

Craig Cleaver's 26 points were tops for the 13-14 Boys. Ryan Prickett (18) and John Archer (15) also scored solidly.

MaKalea Kirkland was high-point for the 15-18 Girls with 15 points, followed by Megan Archer with 14 and Christina Richard with three. An injured Haley Abril gamely contributed to a third-place finish in the 200 Free Relay.

The 15-18 Boys received strong contributions from Rylee Powell (30 points) and Michael Rossmeier (25).

SSA takes a long competitive break while the focus shifts to the SHS Wildcats high school team for the next few weeks.
