Skyline gets Wynn's first win

Published November 12, 2009

Derek Wynn’s first head coaching victory as Skyline’s varsity basketball coach is likely one he won't forget.

The Vikings survived a late Decatur Heritage run and benefited from a bizarre episode on the way to a 65-50 victory Monday night at the Woodville Tip-Off Tournament.

Skyline saw a 16-point fourth quarter cut to 55-49 after Decatur Heritage hit two 3-pointers in a three-second span with 3:03 remaining. Two possessions later, a Decatur Heritage player was called for a foul for going over the back for rebound. The player then lost his cool, receiving a technical foul for arguing then getting another one for shouting at the official.

Skyline made four of the six free throws that followed, and Chris Dulaney scored on the ensuing possession as the Vikings went back in front by 12 at 61-49 with 2:04 remaining. Decatur Heritage scored just one point after the episode while the Vikings made four straight free throws to salt away theirs and Wynn’s first win.

“It’s good to get that first (win) out of the way,” Wynn said.

Skyline finished 1-1 in the tournament after a near-miss against Westminster Christian on Saturday.

Monday’s game was close, with Skyline taking a 16-13 lead after a back-and-forth first quarter. The Vikings led 28-26 at halftime, but Jacob McClennon's 3-pointer and two baskets from Nick Talley and another one from McClennon gave Skyline a 42-31 advantage after three quarters.

Talley's steal and layup gave Skyline a 50-34 lead with 6:02 to play, but Decatur Heritage followed with a 15-5 run to pull within six with three minutes to go.

“We gave good effort, but we’ve got to have controlled effort,” Wynn said. “We’re young, and we’re still learning how to hold a lead in that situation. But we did, and that was good for them.”

McClennon scored 18 points for the Vikings, while Nick Talley scored all 17 of his points in the second half. He also had nine rebounds.

Christian Treece chipped in 15 points for Skyline (1-1), which also got eight points from Travis Sisk, five points and nine rebounds from Dulaney and eight rebounds from Josh Beam. Chris Oliver and Nick Mayo each scored 14 for Decatur Heritage (1-2).
