Scottsboro council OKs new garbage truck
Published December 2, 2009
In a continuation of its meeting from last week, the Scottsboro City Council approved a bid Monday night in order to purchase a new garbage truck for the city’s solid waste department.
The process took about five minutes. Normally the council doesn’t meet on a fifth Monday of the month. However, Solid Waste supervisor Eddie Blizzard said it was important to get a new truck as soon as possible.
Blizzard said one of the department’s trucks broke down recently, meaning only one truck has been running through the city for garbage pickup.
Blizzard said the estimate to repair the old truck, which would need a new engine, would be at least $20,000.
Ingram Equipment Company, in Pelham, received the low bid of $198,358.
Blizzard said the cost of the new truck is lower than originally budgeted. He said last week he expected the cost to be between $210,000-$220,000.
“We’re very fortunate it came under budget,” Blizzard said.
Blizzard added the department should have the new truck in the the next week or so.
• Because of the city’s Christmas parade, the council will not meet on Monday, Dec. 7. There will be a work session and regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 14, beginning at 6 p.m.
