Celebrating God in praise
Published September 18, 2009
Scottsboro’s own gospel music group, The Unity Quartet, will be featured in a Homecoming Concert Saturday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. at The Gathering Church of God on the John T. Reid Parkway.
The Unity Quartet began singing together in Nov. 2005. The group got its name from a sermon on the word “unity” by a local pastor. During the message the speaker explained that “unity” meant “you and I tied to the cross.”
Two members, Mark Carlisle and Ron Hughes, have left the group. Saturday’s concert will be the first with the group’s new members, James Brown and Danny Adkins.
Brown, from Langston, sings tenor. He began his singing career at High Point Baptist Church on Sand Mountain and has performed with The Gospel Starlites, The Evangelaires, The Psalmsters and Pure Harmony.
Adkins, who previously sang with The Alabama Crossmen, will sing lead. He is currently living in Atlanta though he calls Scottsboro home.
Adkins began singing at churches around north Alabama when he was five years old. He, his mother, Gladys, and sister, Linda, were known as the Adkins family.
Randy Whitten, who also sang with The Alabama Crossmen for 18 years, is the group’s owner and manager. He retired the name of that group and formed The Unity Quartet.
Whitten says the quartet’s mission is “to see souls saved.” He believes a song or testimony can sometimes touch a heart the way nothing else has or can. And for those who already believe Whitten says the goal is to lift a heart and provide a blessing through song, laughter and testimony.
“We truly enjoy what we do,” Whitten said. “I have been singing since I was 14 and it is my life.”
Doyle McLain, from Hytop, has a deep, rich voice. He began singing in quartets at the age of six and has sung with The Journeymen, Happy Melody Boys, The Alabama Crossmen and Closer Home.
Jeff McLain with God’s Praise, Millie Bonham and 15-year old Deborah Smith will join the quartet.
There will also be a surprise for those who arrive early for the concert.
