Twenty-two SSA Wet 'N' Wildcat swimmers participated in the East District Championships held last weekend at Chattanooga.
For the 8-Under swimmers, this was their championship meet, and for the older swimmers, it was the last chance to achieve Southeastern Swimming (SES) Championship qualifying times. The Wildcats battled teams from northeast Alabama and east Tennessee, including Knoxville, various Chattanooga clubs, Gadsden and Oak Ridge.
Kyla Reichle placed third overall among 8-Under girls with 51 points. Reichle took home six silver medals (25 Back, 50 Fly, 50 Breast, 100 IM, 25 Breast and 25 Fly) and knocked two more seconds off her team record in the 50 Fly.
Lilly Green finished in 19th place, earning a point with an eighth-place effort in the 25 Back. Logan Anderson placed fifth among the 8-Under Boys with 34 points. Anderson's best swims were bronze medal performances in the 25 and 50 Back.
Ben Gossett and Curtis Cooper tiedfor 11th with six points each. Gossett placed as high as fourth in the 25 Back, while Cooper scored in three events including a sixth-place finish in the 50 Fly.
Staton Robbins narrowly missed scoring in several events and had a slew of personal best times. Skylar Reichle also added a personal best in the 50 Free.
The 8-Under Boys Freestyle and Medley Relay teams (Cooper, Robbins, Gossett and Anderson) both placed second, earning a total of 28 points.
Scottsboro's 9-10 Girls were led by 29 points from the rapidly-improving Ansleigh Hand, who took third-place in the 50 Free and 100 Breast.
Elizabeth Rains added 15 points, including a victory in the 50 Free. Anna Richard's 13 points included a second-place effort in the 100 Fly. Kristin Copeland, Maryann Jones and Bethany Dugan had several personal best times.
The 9-10 Girls Freestyle Relay featuring Richard, Hand, Rains and an injured Copeland came up with a gutsy victory on Saturday, and with eight year-old Reichle replacing Copeland on Sunday was still able to come away with silver. Tadd Hancock had several nice swims for the 9-10 Boys.
Mary Margaret Green scored 23 points for the 11-12 Girls. Green's performance was highlighted by a win in the 100 Breast. Green also placed second in the 50 Breast and 100 Free.
Mary Catherine Gossett took fifth in the 50 Breast on her way to eight points. Jessica Duncan had multiple personal best times in her new age group.
Crossan Cooper had 20 points for the 11-12 Boys. Cooper's big weekend included a victory in the 200 IM and SES qualifying times in the 500 Free and 200 IM.
Cole Cooper scored five points and achieved an elusive SES time in the 100 Fly. Drew Butler also made an SES time in the 100 Breast. Shannon Bradbury's 14 points in the 13-14 Girls events included a victory in the 50 Free. Zach Reichle was team-high with 55 points swimming in the 13-14 Boys age group. Reichle won the 200 Fly with a team-record time and placed second in five additional events.
Heading into this weekend's Southeastern Championships, the Wildcats ended up with nine qualifiers: Kyle Vosen, Anna Richard, Kristin Copeland, Drew Butler, Crossan Cooper, Cole Cooper, Drew Butler, Mary Margaret Green and Zach Reichle. Vosen and Butler in particular are seeded highly and could extend Scottsboro's string of medal-winning performances.
