TVA to reveal weed plan
Published November 6, 2008
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is holding its annual aquatic plant management meeting today in Guntersville, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
The meeting will be held at the Guntersville Recreation Center, which is south of Alabama Highway 69 on Sunset Drive.
In August, a crowd of 150 residents in Scottsboro voiced concerns regarding weed control on Guntersville Lake in a special meeting.
Judy Miller and Bruce Shupp, members of the Guntersville Lake Stakeholders group, answered questions from the crowd. Miller and Shupp also promised to take back questions and concerns from residents to TVA.
In the 69,000-acre lake, it's estimated over 20,000 acres are affected by weed growth. Shupp told Scottsboro residents in August that the weeds were here to stay.
The plants have increased significantly since the early 1990s, where at one point only 5,000 acres of the lake were affected.
Residents argue that money is being lost, namely through bass tournaments, due to the weeds. The weeds also interfere with swimming, skiing, bank fishing; clog boat propellors and make it hard for boaters to reach ramps and docks.
During the August meeting in Scottsboro, there were no representatives present from TVA.
