Pisgah’s season ends with Round 1 loss
Published November 7, 2009
The Pisgah Eagles traveled to the Field of Champions in Piedmont on Friday night, but despite a hearty comeback, the Eagles left with a 44-19 loss to the No. 6-ranked Piedmont Bulldogs in the opening round of the Class 3A Playoffs.
A strong effort by senior quarterback Blair Kenimer and junior running back Jeb Woods were not enough as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 37-0 halftime lead en route to the victory.
Pisgah finished the season at 8-3 while Piedmont advanced to play Susan Moore in Round 2
The Eagles fell behind very early in the contest. After Pisgah failed to convert a thrid down near midfield, Piedmont wasted no time getting on the board quickly with Christian Cantrell's 23-yard touchdown run.
The ensuing kickoff pinned Pisgah deep in their own territory and a false start penalty moved them farther backwards allowing Piedmont's quick defense to get to Kenimer and take him down in the end zone to pick up a safety, putting Pisgah behind 9-0 in the early minutes.
Piedmont quaterback Chase Childers hit Demetrius Johnson for a big gain and James Major used his first run of the game to score a touchdown from seven yards out.
The Eagles drove deep into Bulldogs territory, but the offense stalled at the 24-yard line and forced a turnover on downs.
Childers would reach pay dirt for a touchdown on the ground from 70 yards out and on the next drive spot Dontavious Holloway for a 24-yard touchdown through the air.
Cantrell added a 30-yard touchdown scamper with just 14 seconds remaining in the half after the Bulldogs called a series of time outs, although already ahead 30-0 at that point.
After allowing Major to run for his second touchdown on as many carries, the Eagles' defense would not relinquish another first down on the night.
On the ensuing drive following the Bulldogs final touchdown, Kenimer found a wide open Josh Sensor across the middle of the field and he raced to pay dirt from 33 yards away.
Kenimer then found Zack Peek on a post route that was nearly identical to the pass the two could not hook up with on the first drive, but this time it would go the distance, cutting the lead to 44-13 following Blaine Smith's extra point.
Kenimer then capped his senior season off on his final play as a Pisgah Eagle with a 16-yard touchdown run to finish the game with the final tally of 44-19. Kenimer finished the night completing 7-of-13 passes for 128 yards and two scores. Peek had two catches for 52 yards and a touchdown on the night.
Woods was the work horse for the Eagles on the ground, racking up 110 yards on 16 carries.
