Blockbuster movie has local connection

Since its release on April 3, “Furious 7” has grossed more than $320 million. The movie grossed more than $147 million in its first weekend alone and has been the top-grossing film each weekend since its debut. As these numbers indicate, “Furious 7” has been a huge hit at the box office, and if you’re paying close attention, you’ll notice this blockbuster features a prop that was made right here in Jackson County.

Nearly 2,000 pounds of baby food recalled

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) announced Tuesday that Beech-Nut Nutrition had recalled approximately 1,920 pounds of baby food products that may be contaminated with small pieces of glass.

UBC celebrating 45 years with anniversary party

With an ingenious idea and $300, Doyle Owens borrowed a pickup truck to pick up his first load of unclaimed items in April of 1970. Now, 45 years later, his dream has grown into the 40,000-square-foot Unclaimed Baggage Center (UBC) that attracts nearly one million annual visitors from every state and countries around the world.

Walmart issues raises for employees

As part of Walmart’s additional $1 billion investment in its workers this year, Walmart is giving pay raises to 17,013 associates in Alabama for the pay period starting April 4. With the raises, associates earn at least $1.75 an hour above the federal minimum wage. The new full-time average hourly wage in Alabama is now $12.65.

Local inventors introduce new product

Local inventors John Paul Lambert and Jay Holcomb recently announced the availability of the finished product of their invention, The Ultimate Outdoor Oven by Duck Blind Bistro, to the public. Based in Stevenson, the pair’s three years of design and fine-tuning have produced a unique piece of cookware that is perfect for use on practically all heating surfaces, inside or outside.

Carolyn Harris Hall, Chairperson, and Mike Ellenburg, President and Chief Executive Officer at First Southern State Bank, today announced that State Representative Richard J. The election took place earlier this year, although Lindsey had been serving on First Southern State Bank’s Advisory Board in Centre since 2010.
